# Science — Sleep + Recovery

## The four-pathway thesis

Sleep is not ONE switch. It's at least FOUR overlapping mechanisms. Our formula targets all four:

| Pathway | Ingredient | Dose | Mechanism |
|---|---|---|---|
| **GABA activation** (calm) | Triple Magnesium | 300mg | Mg cofactor in GABA receptor binding, supports inhibitory neurotransmission |
| **Body temperature drop** (sleep onset) | Glycine | 3g | Glycine signals hypothalamus to drop core body temp ~0.5°C — the physiological cue for sleep onset |
| **Alpha brain waves** (quiet mind) | L-Theanine | 200mg | L-Theanine crosses BBB, increases alpha wave activity (the "relaxed but alert" frequency), reduces stress reactivity |
| **Melatonin pathway** (circadian sync) | Tart Cherry Extract | 250mg | Tart cherry contains natural melatonin precursors + tryptophan + antioxidants — supports endogenous melatonin without exogenous pill load |

  - ~65% reduction in deep sleep (Stage 3+4) latency

### L-Theanine

## Why this combination

The interactions between these four ingredients are well-established in sleep science. The reason single-ingredient pills fail:

- **Mg alone** → calms the body but doesn't address the racing mind
- **L-Theanine alone** → quiets the mind but doesn't drop core body temp
- **Glycine alone** → physical sleep onset but doesn't sustain deep sleep
- **Tart Cherry alone** → supports melatonin but doesn't activate GABA

Combined, they hit all four sleep pathways. This is why the formula compounds in effect over 1-2 weeks of nightly use.

## What the formula is NOT

- NOT a sedative or hypnotic
- NOT melatonin replacement at the dose level (Tart Cherry provides precursors, not exogenous melatonin)
- NOT habit-forming or dependency-creating
- NOT for under-18s, pregnant, or breastfeeding (consult doctor)

## Safe upper limits

- Supplemental Mg: ~350mg/day (we provide 300mg, leaving room for dietary Mg)
- Glycine: well-tolerated up to 30g/day, we use 3g
- L-Theanine: safe at 200-600mg/day, we use 200mg
- Tart Cherry Extract: no established UL, we use 250mg

## Future research we're watching

- Mg + cognitive aging (emerging Alzheimer's research)
- Glycine in sports recovery
- L-Theanine for ADHD-related sleep issues
- Tart Cherry in athletic recovery
